Ancient Torment have long been part of the New England black metal scene – and now, after nine years of band history and countless splits and demos, they’re finally releasing their first LP. Reason enough to take a closer look at this dark creation.
The sound is exactly what I love about black metal: fast, hard, aggressive – but with just the right pinch of melody. Not a single moment of boredom came up while listening. Even when the storm briefly dies down, you’ll always find exciting details: small nuances, atmospheric transitions, or even a spoken-word part. This keeps you hooked – and makes the album stand out much more than many other releases in the genre.
Vocally, you get what you’d expect: raw, wild, full of energy – yet still technically spot-on.
The production is also convincing. It’s raw enough to capture the unpolished, untamed character, yet clear enough to let the instrumental quality of the five guys from Providence truly shine.
If you had to place Follow the Echo of Curses, it sits somewhere at the upper end of the underground. Raw and uncompromising enough for purists – but still accessible for those who might not feel fully at home in black metal yet.
